Indications
Sasolin MR Hydrochloride is prescribed for the management of symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), particularly for improving urine flow and alleviating discomfort caused by an enlarged prostate.
Always follow the guidance of a registered healthcare professional for proper use of medication.
Pharmacology
Sasolin MR contains Tamsulosin, a selective alpha-1 adrenoceptor antagonist, which specifically targets the alpha-1A receptors in the prostate. This action relaxes the smooth muscle in the bladder neck and prostate, leading to improved urinary flow and reduced BPH symptoms. Following oral administration, Tamsulosin is almost completely absorbed, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 4-7 hours, depending on whether it is taken with food. The drug is highly protein-bound (94-99%) and metabolized in the liver. The half-life of Tamsulosin is extended to 9-15 hours, offering sustained symptom relief for BPH.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: Take one capsule of Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 0.4 mg daily after a meal, preferably at night. After 2-4 weeks, the dosage may be increased to 0.8 mg (two capsules) once daily if required.
- Important: Do not chew or crush the capsules. Swallow them whole with water. If therapy is paused for a few days, restart with the 0.4 mg dose.
Always take Sasolin MR under the supervision of a registered healthcare provider.
Interactions
- Concomitant use of other alpha-1 blockers may cause hypotension.
- Sasolin MR shows no significant interactions with atenolol, enalapril, or nifedipine, but cimetidine may increase plasma levels, while furosemide may lower them.
- Drugs such as diclofenac and warfarin may influence Sasolin MR elimination.
Contraindications
Sasolin MR should not be used by individuals who have:
- A history of hypersensitivity to Tamsulosin.
- Severe liver impairment.
- Orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure upon standing).
Patients should also undergo a prostate exam before starting treatment, and regular monitoring is advised.
Side Effects
Possible side effects include:
- Dizziness
- Abnormal ejaculation
- Headache
- Asthenia (fatigue)
- Postural hypotension and palpitations
Pregnancy & Lactation
Sasolin MR is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited data on its safety.
Precautions & Warnings
- Postural Hypotension: Rarely, dizziness and fainting may occur after the first dose.
- Driving & Machinery: Be cautious when engaging in activities requiring focus, such as driving, as dizziness may impair concentration.
Overdose Effects
In case of overdose, acute hypotension may occur. Treat by laying the patient down and providing cardiovascular support. If necessary, vasopressors and volume expanders may be used. Dialysis is unlikely to be effective due to the drug’s strong binding to plasma proteins.
