Composition
This formulation contains:
- 0.5% w/v Chlorhexidine Gluconate (equivalent to a 2.5% v/v Chlorhexidine Gluconate solution BP)
- 70% v/v Isopropyl Alcohol BP
Pharmacology
At physiological pH, chlorhexidine salts dissociate, releasing the positively charged chlorhexidine cation. This cationic molecule binds to the negatively charged walls of bacterial cells, exerting its bactericidal effect. At lower concentrations, chlorhexidine provides a bacteriostatic effect, while higher concentrations lead to membrane disruption and cell death.
