Description
Salicid is a prescription-only topical aid designed for the removal of excessive keratin in hyperkeratotic skin disorders, including verrucae and various ichthyoses (vulgaris, sex-linked, and lamellar), keratosis palmaris and plantaris, keratosis pilaris, pityriasis rubra pilaris, and psoriasis (including body, scalp, palms, and soles).
Pharmacology
Salicylic Acid exhibits potent keratolytic and slight antiseptic actions when topically applied to the skin. At low concentrations, it demonstrates keratoplastic activity, correcting abnormal keratinization, while higher concentrations exert keratolytic effects, leading to skin peeling. Salicylic Acid softens and eliminates the stratum corneum by increasing endogenous hydration, likely due to decreased pH, resulting in swelling, softening, and desquamation of the cornified epithelium. Overuse of the drug may cause necrosis of normal skin. Additionally, at high concentrations, Salicylic Acid can have a caustic effect. Moisture is crucial for its action on the skin, facilitating maceration and desquamation of epidermal tissue. The drug also possesses weak antifungal and antibacterial activity.
Dosage & Administration
6% & 12% Salicylic Acid:
- Apply to the affected area once daily. Prioritize hydration of the area for 5 minutes before application whenever possible. Occlude the area at night and wash off in the morning. Safe for children over 2 years of age.
2% Salicylic Acid:
- Initially, apply enough medicine to cover the affected area once daily in the first week, then increase to 2 to 3 times daily from the second week onwards, rubbing gently. Rinse the face with cool water after 3-5 minutes. Safe for children over 2 years of age.
