Indications
Pronor serves as an effective remedy for managing and treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), aiming to:
- Promote regression of an enlarged prostate
- Enhance urinary flow
- Alleviate symptoms associated with BPH.
Pharmacology
Pronor contains finasteride, a competitive inhibitor of the 5α reductase enzyme, specifically targeting the type 2 enzyme. Unlike some treatments, it doesn’t bind to androgen receptors. The development of BPH hinges on the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) within the prostate. Finasteride, belonging to a novel class of specific inhibitors of 5α reductase, impedes this process, hindering the conversion of testosterone to DHT without interacting with androgen receptors.
Dosage & Administration
The recommended dosage entails one 5 mg tablet per day. While initial improvements may surface, sustained treatment for at least six months is advised to evaluate the response. Continuation of treatment beyond this period may be necessary.
Interaction
Pronor exhibits no significant interactions with crucial drug metabolizing enzymes, including the cytochrome P450 system. Tested compounds in humans, such as Propranolol, Digoxin, Glibenclamide, Warfarin, Theophylline, and antipyrine, haven’t shown notable interactions with Pronor.
Contraindications
Pronor should not be used by individuals with hypersensitivity to any of its components. Additionally, finasteride is contraindicated in women and pediatric patients.
Side Effects
Pronor is generally well-tolerated. Adverse experiences reported in clinical studies, possibly drug-related, include impotence (3.7%), decreased libido (3.3%), and decreased ejaculate volume (2.8%) among patients treated with 5 mg Pronor daily for 12 months.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Finasteride usage is contraindicated in pregnant women and not recommended for use in women overall. Potential exposure to finasteride poses risks to male fetuses, necessitating caution in handling crushed or broken tablets by pregnant women or those planning pregnancy.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients with large residual urine volume and severely diminished urinary flow should be monitored closely for obstructive uropathy. Prior to initiating Pronor therapy and periodically thereafter, patients with BPH should undergo digital rectal examination and other evaluations for prostate cancer.
Use in Special Populations
No dosage adjustments are deemed necessary in patients with renal insufficiency. However, there is limited data available regarding the use of Pronor in patients with hepatic insufficiency.
Elderly: No dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Therapeutic Class
Pronor belongs to the therapeutic class of drugs indicated for BPH, urinary retention, and urinary incontinence.
Storage Conditions
Keep Pronor stored in a cool, dry place, below 30°C, and shielded from light and moisture. Ensure all medications are kept out of children’s reach.
