Pharmacological Information
Levocarnitine, a naturally occurring compound, plays a crucial role in energy metabolism in mammals. It facilitates the transport of long-chain fatty acids into cellular mitochondria, where they are oxidized to produce energy. While fatty acids serve as the primary energy source in skeletal and cardiac muscle, they are not utilized by the brain.
Dosage & Administration
Levocarnitine Tablets:
- Adults: 330 mg, taken two to three times per day based on clinical needs.
- Children & Infants: Dosage starts at 50-100 mg/kg/day in divided doses, up to a maximum of 3 g/day. Adjustments are made according to clinical response.
Levocarnitine Oral Solution (For oral use only):
- Adults: The recommended dosage is 10-30 ml per day. Higher doses should be administered cautiously, beginning with 10 ml per day and gradually increasing, observing for therapeutic response.
- Children & Infants: The initial recommended dosage is 50-100 mg/kg/day, which can be slowly increased up to a maximum of 30 ml/day. The solution can be taken directly or mixed with a drink or liquid food. Always follow the dosage instructions provided by your physician.
Note: It is best to space doses evenly throughout the day, ideally during or after meals, and consume the solution slowly to improve tolerance.
Always follow your doctor’s advice when taking this medication.
Side Effects
Ocarnix is generally well-tolerated, though some users may experience mild side effects, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, or diarrhea.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no well-controlled studies on the use of Levocarnitine during pregnancy. It should only be used during pregnancy when absolutely necessary. Its effects on nursing mothers and infants have not been specifically studied, so the benefits to the mother should be weighed against the potential risks to the child. A healthcare provider may recommend discontinuing breastfeeding or Levocarnitine treatment if necessary.
Precautions & Warnings
To avoid gastrointestinal discomfort, Ocarnix should not be consumed too rapidly. The safety and effectiveness of Ocarnix in patients with renal insufficiency have not been established. Long-term use of high doses in patients with severe kidney dysfunction or end-stage renal disease (ESRD) may lead to the accumulation of harmful metabolites such as trimethylamine (TMA) and trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), which are typically excreted via the kidneys.
Overdose Effects
No toxic effects from an Ocarnix overdose have been reported to date.
Therapeutic Class
Muscular energy metabolism medications.
