Indications for Norestin
Norestin is prescribed for various gynecological conditions, including:
- Dysfunctional uterine bleeding (Metropathia hemorrhagic)
- Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
- Delaying menstruation
- Endometriosis
- Heavy menstrual bleeding (Menorrhagia)
Pharmacological Profile
Norestin contains Norethisterone, a synthetic progestin with effects similar to progesterone. It is a potent ovulation inhibitor with minimal estrogenic and androgenic properties. Norethisterone is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, providing effects for at least 24 hours, and is eventually excreted in the urine.
Dosage and Administration
Norestin is administered orally and is not suitable for children.
- Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding: Take 1 tablet three times daily for 10 days. Bleeding typically ceases within 1-3 days, with withdrawal bleeding occurring within 2-4 days after stopping the medication.
- Preventing Recurrence of Dysfunctional Bleeding: If ovarian function does not normalize (indicated by the absence of a rise in the second half of the cycle’s morning temperature), recurrence is likely. Administer 1 tablet twice daily from the 19th to the 26th day of the cycle to establish cyclical bleeding.
- Premenstrual Syndrome (Including Premenstrual Mastalgia): For symptoms such as headaches, migraines, breast tenderness, fluid retention, tachycardia, and psychological issues, take 2-3 tablets daily from the 19th to the 26th day of the cycle. Treatment may be repeated for several cycles, with potential symptom relief lasting for several months after discontinuation.
- Menstruation Postponement: To delay menstruation due to frequent bleeding or special circumstances (e.g., surgery, travel), start 1 tablet three times daily, 3 days before the expected onset of menstruation. Menstruation should resume 2-3 days after stopping the medication.
- Endometriosis (Pseudo-Pregnancy Therapy): Begin treatment on the 5th day of the cycle with 2 tablets daily for the initial weeks. If spotting occurs, increase the dosage to 4 or 5 tablets daily. Once bleeding subsides, return to the initial dose. The treatment duration is typically 4-6 months, but may be extended if needed.
- Menorrhagia: Take 1 tablet 2-3 times a day from the 19th to the 26th day of the cycle, counting the first day of menstruation as day 1.
Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions when using this medication.
