Indications:
Nitaxide is designed to treat diarrhea caused by the protozoa Cryptosporidium parvum, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica. This medication targets these specific pathogens to alleviate symptoms effectively.
Pharmacology:
Nitazoxanide, the active ingredient in Nitaxide, is a synthetic antiprotozoal medication administered orally. It works by disrupting the Pyruvate Ferredoxin Oxido Reductase (PFOR) enzyme-dependent electron transfer, which is crucial for the anaerobic energy metabolism of protozoa. Both Nitazoxanide and its metabolite, tizoxanide, have demonstrated in vitro efficacy against the sporozoites and oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum and the trophozoites of Giardia lamblia.
Dosage & Administration:
- Children aged 1-3 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of the suspension every 12 hours for 3 days.
- Children aged 4-11 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of the suspension every 12 hours for 3 days.
- Individuals aged 12 years and above: 25 ml (5 teaspoons) of the suspension or 1 tablet every 12 hours for 3 days.
For optimal results, it is recommended to take Nitaxide with food.
Interactions:
Nitaxide is highly bound to plasma proteins. Caution is advised when administering it alongside other drugs that are also highly protein-bound and have a narrow therapeutic index.
Contraindications:
Avoid using Nitaxide in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Nitazoxanide or any of the components in the formulation.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include abdominal pain, vomiting, and headaches, which are generally mild and temporary. Rare side effects may include nausea, anorexia, flatulence, increased appetite, enlarged salivary glands, elevated creatinine and SGPT levels, itching, rhinitis, sweating, dizziness, and discolored urine.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Nitazoxanide is categorized as a FDA pregnancy category B drug. Although animal studies suggest safety, there are no well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Therefore, it should be used during pregnancy only if clearly necessary. Nitazoxanide is known to be excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised when administering it during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use Nitaxide with caution in patients with hepatic, biliary, or renal conditions.
Therapeutic Class:
Anti-diarrheal Antiprotozoal
Storage Conditions:
Store in a dry place away from light and heat. Keep out of reach of children.
