Indications:
Neofloxin is prescribed for treating single or mixed infections caused by susceptible organisms, including those resistant to other antibiotics like Aminoglycosides, Penicillins, and Cephalosporins. It effectively manages infections of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal tracts, as well as gonorrhea and septicaemia.
Pharmacology:
Ciprofloxacin, a synthetic quinolone, exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria. It inhibits DNA gyrase, essential for bacterial DNA synthesis, and is well absorbed orally with extensive tissue distribution.
Dosage:
General dosage recommendations for adults range from 100-750 mg twice daily depending on infection severity. Specific conditions may require doses of 250-750 mg twice daily, with adjustments for renal impairment and elderly patients.
Administration:
Neofloxin can be taken orally or administered via IV infusion. It should be taken with plenty of fluids and can be taken with or without meals. Avoid concurrent use with certain antacids or dairy products.
Interaction:
Avoid concurrent use of Neofloxin with magnesium/aluminum antacids, sucralfate, or products containing calcium, iron, or zinc, as these can reduce its absorption.
Contraindications:
Avoid Neofloxin in patients with hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, CNS effects, hypersensitivity reactions, and potential joint issues in children.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential arthropathy in immature animals; caution advised during lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Use Neofloxin cautiously in patients with CNS disorders or a predisposition to seizures; monitor renal and hepatic function during treatment.
Use in Special Populations:
While effective, Neofloxin is not the first-line treatment for pediatric populations.
Storage Conditions:
Store Neofloxin below 30°C, protect from light and moisture, and keep out of reach of children.
