Indications
Nafodil is prescribed to address peripheral vascular disorders, encompassing blood circulation issues beyond the brain and heart. It effectively manages various symptoms associated with these disorders, including:
- Intermittent claudication
- Nocturnal leg cramps
- Rest pain, severe leg pain while resting
- Cold-induced worsening of pale or blue fingers or toes
- Sensations of numbness, tingling, or burning in fingers or toes (Raynaud’s syndrome or acrocyanosis)
- Trophic ulcers (open sores on the legs or feet)
- Diabetic arteriopathy, improving poor circulation caused by diabetes
- Treatment of gangrene
Pharmacology
Naftidrofuryl oxalate exhibits 5HT2-blocking activity, counteracting vasoconstriction and platelet aggregation induced by serotonin. It enhances intracellular metabolism by increasing ATP levels, reducing lactic acid in ischemic conditions, and boosting cellular oxidative capacity. Additionally, it acts as a potent spasmolytic agent.
Dosage & Administration
Physicians typically recommend taking one or two Naftidrofuryl oxalate capsules three times daily with meals for a minimum of three months or as advised by a healthcare professional.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or any excipients.
- History of hyperoxaluria or recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones.
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal disorders: Diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain (uncommon).
- Renal and urinary disorders: Calcium oxalate kidney stones (very rare).
- Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Skin rash (uncommon).
- Hepatobiliary disorders: Liver damage (rare).
Pregnancy & Lactation
Due to limited clinical data, the use of Naftidrofuryl Oxalate is not recommended during pregnancy. Breastfeeding women should also avoid its use due to unknown effects on milk excretion.
Precautions & Warnings
- Administration of Nafodil may alter urine composition, potentially promoting calcium oxalate kidney stone formation.
- Taking Nafodil without sufficient liquid before bedtime may lead to local esophagitis; always ingest the capsule with an ample amount of water.
- Cases of liver damage have been reported.
Overdose Effects
Overdose may result in depression of cardiac conduction and convulsions.
