Indications:
Mucospel is prescribed for respiratory tract disorders accompanied by productive cough, such as:
- Tracheobronchitis
- Bronchitis with emphysema
- Bronchiectasis
- Bronchitis with bronchospasm
- Chronic inflammatory pulmonary conditions
- Pneumoconiosis
Pharmacology:
Bromhexine Hydrochloride acts as an oral mucolytic by disrupting acid mucopolysaccharide fibers in mucoid sputum, reducing mucus viscosity for easier expectoration. It is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and widely distributed throughout the body tissues.
Dosage & Administration:
- Adults & Children over 12 years: 10 ml (2 teaspoons) three times daily
- Children 6-12 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon) three times daily
- Children 2-6 years: 2.5 ml (1/2 teaspoon) three times daily
- Not recommended for children under 2 years without medical advice
Interaction:
No significant interactions with other drugs have been reported.
Contraindications:
Avoid use in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Bromhexine Hydrochloride or any product ingredients.
Side Effects:
Potential gastrointestinal disturbances and occasional transient increases in serum aminotransferase values. Reported side effects include headache, dizziness, and allergic reactions.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: Use with caution; weigh benefits against potential risks.
- Lactation: Avoid use due to potential passage into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings:
Exercise caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer disease or asthma. Monitor patients with severe hepatic or renal impairment due to potential reduced clearance of bromhexine and its metabolites.
