Indications
Mexlo ophthalmic solution is prescribed for bacterial eye infections, including conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and blepharoconjunctivitis caused by susceptible germs, including Staphylococcus aureus-induced corneal ulcers.
Pharmacology
Containing Lomefloxacin, a difluorinated quinolone derivative, Mexlo inhibits bacterial gyrase, effectively targeting both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It disrupts various bacterial DNA processes, resulting in rapid bacterial elimination. Mexlo demonstrates low acute toxicity and minimal cross-resistance with other antibiotics.
Dosage
Recommended for adults and children over 1 year old, administer 1 drop into the lower conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily. During initial treatment, apply more frequently, with up to 5 drops within 20 minutes or 1 drop every hour for 6-10 hours. Treatment duration typically spans 7 to 9 days.
Administration
Mexlo can be taken with or without food as advised by a healthcare professional.
Interaction
Avoid using ophthalmic preparations containing heavy metals like zinc 15 minutes before and after applying Mexlo to prevent reduced efficacy. Concurrent use of bacteriostatic ophthalmic antibiotics with Mexlo eye drops is not recommended.
Contraindications
Mexlo eye drops are contraindicated in individuals hypersensitive to the active ingredient, excipients, or quinolones. Prolonged antibiotic treatment may increase the risk of secondary fungal infections or promote growth of non-susceptible bacteria.
Side Effects
Reported side effects include slight and transient burning upon instillation in 4.7% of users. While phototoxicity is rare, photosensitization is possible. Allergic reactions may occur, including asthma, urticaria, and erythema.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Limited data are available on Mexlo’s safety during pregnancy and lactation. Animal studies suggest placental transfer and excretion into maternal milk after systemic use. Use during pregnancy or lactation should be considered only if benefits outweigh potential risks.
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid intensive sunlight or UV exposure during Mexlo treatment to prevent potential phototoxicity.
Overdose Effects
Accidental oral ingestion poses minimal risk due to the low quantity of Mexlo in a 5 ml bottle. Practically, adverse effects are unlikely.
Therapeutic Class
Mexlo belongs to the therapeutic class of 4-quinolone preparations and ophthalmic antibacterial drugs.
Storage Conditions
Store Mexlo at 15-25°C in a cool, dry place.
