Indications
Laxyl is prescribed for a range of conditions including acute tension, anxiety states, interpersonal difficulties, agitation, insomnia, depressive reactions, functional disturbances in cardiovascular and respiratory systems, gastrointestinal tract issues, urinary tract disturbances, psychosomatic disorders, and emotional reactions to chronic organic diseases.
Pharmacology
Bromazepam, the active ingredient in Laxyl, is a potent psychotropic agent. It selectively reduces tension and anxiety at lower doses and exhibits sedative and muscle-relaxant properties at higher doses. It acts by binding to the GABA-A receptor, enhancing its inhibitory effects without affecting other neurotransmitters.
Dosage
For outpatient therapy, the average dosage ranges from 1.5 to 3 mg up to three times daily, starting with low doses and gradually increasing. In severe cases, especially in hospital settings, dosages may range from 6 to 12 mg two or three times daily, not exceeding 8-12 weeks of treatment overall. Lower doses are recommended for elderly and debilitated patients, and for children, dosage should be adjusted based on body weight.
Administration
Laxyl tablets are intended for oral administration as directed by a healthcare professional.
Interactions
Combining Laxyl with other centrally active drugs can enhance its sedative effects. These include antidepressants, hypnotics, narcotics, antipsychotics, and sedative antihistamines. Co-administration with cimetidine may prolong elimination half-life. Avoiding alcohol consumption while taking Laxyl is advised due to potential intensification of sedative effects.
Contraindications
Bromazepam is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity, severe respiratory or hepatic insufficiency, or sleep apnea syndrome.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include fatigue, drowsiness, muscle weakness, reduced alertness, confusion, headache, and ataxia. These typically diminish with prolonged use. Anterograde amnesia may occur at therapeutic doses.
Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of bromazepam during pregnancy is not established, and its use should be avoided during lactation due to excretion in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Long-term use of benzodiazepines can lead to physical and psychological dependence. Gradual dosage reduction is recommended to minimize withdrawal symptoms. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. Laxyl is not recommended for primary treatment of sleeplessness caused by psychotic illness.
Therapeutic Class
Laxyl belongs to the therapeutic class of benzodiazepine sedatives.
Storage Conditions
Store Laxyl in a dry place away from light and heat, and keep out of reach of children.
