Kofnix SR

Indications

Kofnix SR is designed to effectively alleviate dry (non-productive) cough, often caused by viral infections. It is also used to manage cough during pre- and post-operative sedation for patients undergoing surgeries or bronchoscopy. Additionally, Kofnix is beneficial for treating acute cough from various causes, including whooping cough, and cough associated with lower respiratory tract infections such as tracheitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis.

Pharmacology

Butamirate Citrate works directly on the brain’s cough center, effectively suppressing the cough reflex. Unlike opium alkaloids, Butamirate Citrate is non-sedating and free from the sedative side effects typically associated with similar compounds. It is rapidly absorbed upon oral administration, with peak concentration occurring within 9 hours when taken as a sustained-release tablet. The compound is highly protein-bound and has a plasma half-life of approximately 13 hours. Additionally, its active metabolites contribute to its antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects.

Dosage & Administration

For Adults:

• Butamirate Citrate 50 mg Tablet: Take 2-3 tablets daily.
• Butamirate Citrate Syrup: Take 15 ml four times a day.

For Children & Adolescents:

• Butamirate Citrate 50 mg Tablet:
  • Adolescents over 12 years: 1-2 tablets daily.
• Butamirate Citrate Syrup:
  • Children (3-6 years): 5 ml three times daily.
  • Children (6-12 years): 10 ml three times daily.
  • Adolescents: 15 ml three times daily.
• Butamirate Citrate Pediatric Drops:
  • Children (2 months – 1 year): 0.50 ml four times daily.
  • Children (1-3 years): 0.75 ml four times daily.

Interactions

Avoid using Kofnix concurrently with expectorants as it may cause mucus retention in the airways, increasing the risk of bronchospasm and respiratory infections.

Contraindications

Kofnix should not be used by individuals who are hypersensitive to Butamirate Citrate or any of the ingredients in the medication.

Side Effects

Kofnix is generally well-tolerated. However, in rare cases, side effects such as rash, nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness may occur, which typically resolve upon reducing the dose or discontinuing treatment.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Butamirate Citrate is not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. It may be used during the remainder of pregnancy only under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Given the lack of data on the elimination of Butamirate Citrate in breast milk, its use during breastfeeding should be carefully considered by weighing the benefits against potential risks.

Precautions & Warnings

Kofnix suppresses the cough reflex, so it should not be used alongside expectorants, which could lead to mucus build-up and increase the risk of respiratory complications. If coughing persists for more than 7 days (or 3 days in children under 12), consult a healthcare provider.

Overdose Effects

In the event of an overdose, symptoms may include drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and low blood pressure. Immediate medical attention is required, and standard emergency procedures, including activated charcoal and saline laxatives, should be followed.
