Indications
Ketomar is indicated for the following medical conditions:
- Prophylactic treatment of bronchial asthma.
- Symptomatic relief of allergic conditions, including rhinitis and conjunctivitis.
- Management of itching, pain, and tenderness associated with neurofibromas.
- Treatment of allergic reactions such as hay fever and urticaria.
Use only as directed by a registered healthcare provider.
Pharmacology
Ketotifen is an anti-allergic medication with antihistamine properties. It works similarly to sodium cromoglycate in preventing asthma attacks and is highly effective in reducing the frequency and severity of asthma symptoms. Ketotifen demonstrates strong anti-anaphylactic effects and inhibits histamine reactions, providing sustained relief from allergic reactions. Research has shown that Ketotifen, when taken orally, is as effective as inhaled mast cell stabilizers in managing asthma. Long-term clinical trials have shown significant reductions in the number and severity of asthma attacks, and in some cases, patients experienced complete relief. It also allows for the reduction of corticosteroids and bronchodilators in asthma management. Full prophylactic effects may take several weeks to manifest, and Ketotifen is not effective in treating acute asthma attacks.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: Take 1 mg twice daily with food. In severe cases, the dose may be increased to 2 mg twice daily.
- Children (above 3 years): Administer 1 mg twice daily with food. For patients prone to sedation, start with 0.5 to 1 mg at night for the first few days, or as directed by a physician.
- Elderly: Follow the adult dosage instructions, or as advised by a healthcare provider.
Always follow the guidance of a registered healthcare provider.
Drug Interactions
Ketomar may enhance the effects of sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, and alcohol. A decrease in platelet count has been observed when Ketotifen is used with oral antidiabetic medications, so this combination should be avoided.
Contraindications
- Avoid using Ketotifen with oral antidiabetic agents due to the potential risk of a reversible decrease in platelet count.
- Although no teratogenic effects have been reported, Ketotifen should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed by a doctor.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, and in some cases, dry mouth and mild dizziness. These symptoms usually subside after a few days of use.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Ketotifen is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, despite the lack of evidence suggesting teratogenic effects.
Precautions & Warnings
- Continue previous asthma treatments for at least two weeks after starting Ketomar to avoid exacerbating asthma symptoms. This is particularly important for patients using systemic corticosteroids or ACTH.
- In the event of an infection, Ketomar treatment should be supplemented with appropriate antimicrobial therapy.
- During the first day of treatment, patients should refrain from operating machinery or driving until they understand how Ketomar affects them.
- Alcohol should be avoided while using Ketomar, as it can intensify the sedative effects of the drug.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose may include confusion, drowsiness, headache, bradycardia, and respiratory depression. In case of overdose, gastric lavage or emesis should be performed. General supportive care is recommended.
Therapeutic Class
Cromoglycate & related drugs.
