Indications
- Glycemic Control: Indicated for improving glycemic control in patients with diabetes mellitus.
- Usage: Administration should be based on registered medical advice.
Composition
- Insulin Aspart: Each ml contains 100 IU (equivalent to 3.50 mg).
Description
- Formulation: Sterile, clear solution of Glyset R for subcutaneous or intravenous injection.
- Mechanism: Blood glucose lowering agent with a rapid onset of action compared to regular human insulin. It is a recombinant DNA technology product with a single amino acid substitution (Proline to Aspartic Acid at B28).
Pharmacology
- Function: Regulates glucose metabolism by binding to insulin receptors on muscle and fat cells, facilitating glucose uptake and inhibiting liver glucose output.
Dosage
- General Guidelines:
- Administer immediately before meals.
- Individual dosage is determined by physician advice, generally between 0.5 and 1.0 IU/kg/day for adults and children over 2 years.
- 50-70% of meal-related insulin needs may be covered by Insulin Aspart, with the remainder from long-acting insulin.
- Administration Methods:
- Subcutaneous Injection: In the abdomen, buttocks, thigh, or upper arm; inject 5-10 minutes before meals.
- Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII): Via an external pump; do not mix with other insulins.
- Intravenous Use: Administer under medical supervision with close monitoring of blood glucose and potassium levels.
Administration Instructions
- Follow ConviPen instructions for cartridge insertion and needle attachment.
- Gently mix the insulin by inverting the pen 8-10 times.
- Remove the needle cap and expel air bubbles.
- Adjust dosage and inject at the specified site.
- Avoid cross-contamination by keeping the needle sterile.
Interactions
- Substances Reducing Insulin Requirements:
- Oral anti-diabetic agents, ACE inhibitors, certain antibiotics, and more.
- Substances Increasing Insulin Requirements:
- Thiazides, glucocorticoids, thyroid hormones, and others.
- Caution: Beta-blockers, clonidine, and alcohol may affect insulin’s effectiveness.
Side Effects
- Common: Hypoglycemia, allergic reactions, injection site reactions, lipodystrophy, pruritus, and rash.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Category: B (No restrictions during lactation; dosage adjustments may be needed).
Precautions & Warnings
- Regular blood glucose monitoring is essential; dose adjustments should be made cautiously under medical supervision.
Overdose Effects
- Hypoglycemia: Mild cases treated with glucose; severe cases requiring glucagon (0.5 to 1 mg) or intravenous glucose.
Therapeutic Class
- Type: Rapid Acting Insulin.
Storage Conditions
- Store between 2°C to 8°C (refrigerate), avoid freezing, and protect from light.
Additional Note
- Always consult a registered physician for advice on medication usage.
