Indications
Glucovis Ophthalmic Solution is formulated to effectively manage intraocular pressure. It is indicated for treating ocular hypertension and chronic open-angle glaucoma, either as a standalone therapy or in combination with other intraocular pressure-reducing medications.
Description
Glucovis contains Betaxolol, a selective beta-1-adrenergic blocker that helps lower elevated intraocular pressure. This solution is effective for both elevated and normal intraocular pressure, with a mechanism that involves reducing aqueous humor production. It is a preferred choice due to its lack of significant side effects like miosis or accommodative spasm.
Pharmacology
Betaxolol, the active ingredient in Glucovis, operates by blocking beta-1-adrenergic receptors, leading to reduced aqueous humor production. The onset of action is typically within 30 minutes, with peak effects observable around two hours post-application. The solution offers sustained intraocular pressure reduction, maintaining pressure below 22 mm Hg with bi-daily use.
Dosage & Administration
For the 0.5% solution, apply 1 drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily. For the 0.25% solution, administer 1-2 drops twice daily. Adjustments may be needed based on individual response and follow-up with an eye care professional is recommended.
Interactions
When used with oral beta-blockers, monitor for potential additive effects on intraocular pressure and systemic beta blockade. Caution is advised when used with catecholamine-depleting drugs or adrenergic psychotropic medications.
Contraindications
Do not use Glucovis if you have hypersensitivity to Betaxolol or other components. It is contraindicated in patients with sinus bradycardia, severe heart block, cardiogenic shock, or a history of overt cardiac failure.
Side Effects
Common side effects include temporary discomfort and occasional tearing. Rare systemic effects may include bradycardia, heart block, bronchospasm, and hives. Ocular side effects like corneal sensitivity and keratitis have been noted.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Betaxolol should be used during pregnancy only if necessary, as its effects on fetal development are not well-studied. It is not known whether Betaxolol is excreted in breast milk, and breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment due to potential risks.
Precautions & Warnings
For angle-closure glaucoma, combine Glucovis with a miotic agent since it does not affect pupil constriction. Use with caution in patients with diabetes or those at risk of spontaneous hypoglycemia, as beta-blockers may mask hypoglycemia symptoms.
Overdose Effects
There is limited information on overdose; however, in the event of topical overdosage, flush the eyes with warm water.
