Indications
This medication is recommended for various dermatological conditions, including burns, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, ecthyma, excoriation, folliculitis, furunculosis, insect bites and stings, lacerations and abrasions, paronychia, pyoderma gangrenosum, skin cysts and abscesses, stasis ulcers, infected skin ulcers, bacterial, fungal, or viral superinfections, sycosis barbae, minor surgical wounds, and infected contact dermatitis caused by susceptible organisms.
Pharmacological Profile
Gentamicin Sulfate, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, exhibits potent bactericidal activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, including E. coli, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and penicillin-resistant strains of Staph. aureus. It operates by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis, similar to other aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Dosage & Administration
Administer three times daily. Before application, cleanse the area with soap and water and ensure thorough drying. If crusts are present, gently remove them before applying the ointment to optimize contact with infecting organisms.
Contraindications
Patients with hypersensitivity to gentamicin should avoid gentamicin injection and ointment. Additionally, it is contraindicated during pregnancy and in individuals with myasthenia gravis.
Adverse Effects
Potential side effects may include itching, redness, swelling, or other signs of irritation.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding
Gentamicin falls under Pregnancy Category D, and trace amounts have been detected in breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
Precautions & Warnings
Exercise caution when using Genacyn Ointment in patients known to be hypersensitive to Genacyn.
