Floxabid DS has proven efficacy in treating infections of the urinary, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems, gonorrhoea, and septicaemia. It is also effective against Pseudomonas and other resistant strains, often used alone or combined with Aminoglycosides or beta-lactam antibiotics.
Common infections treated by Floxabid DS include:
- Severe systemic infections: Septicaemia, peritonitis, infections in immunocompromised patients, and those in intensive care.

Always consult a registered physician before using any medication.
Pharmacology
Ciprofloxacin, the active ingredient in Floxabid DS, is a broad-spectrum quinolone antibiotic that is effective against many gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA synthesis via DNA gyrase interference, making it bactericidal. After oral administration, Ciprofloxacin is quickly absorbed, reaching effective concentrations in tissues, urine, and body fluids, providing broad antimicrobial coverage.
Dosage
- Adults: For infections, the typical dose ranges from 100 mg to 750 mg twice daily, depending on infection severity.
- Urinary infections: 250-500 mg twice daily.
- Respiratory infections: 250-500 mg twice daily, with a higher dose for Streptococcus pneumoniae.
- Gonorrhoea: A single dose of 250-500 mg.
- Other infections: Typically 500-750 mg twice daily.
- For children: Not recommended for growing children or adolescents due to potential risks to joints.
Administration
- Ciprofloxacin IV infusion should be prepared and administered carefully to avoid contamination and leakage. Follow the recommended dosage and infusion guidelines to ensure safety and efficacy.
- Always use proper fluid levels and avoid infusions in series connections.
Interactions
- Avoid concurrent use with magnesium/aluminum-containing antacids, sucralfate, or calcium, iron, and zinc products. Separate doses by at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after using Floxabid DS.
Contraindications
- Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other quinolones should not use Floxabid DS.
Side Effects
- Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues (nausea, diarrhea), central nervous system disturbances (headache, dizziness), and allergic reactions (rash, pruritus). In rare cases, severe effects like seizures and retinal detachment can occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Ciprofloxacin is not recommended during pregnancy due to the potential risk of arthropathy in developing animals. It is also excreted in breast milk, so its use in nursing mothers is contraindicated.
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with CNS disorders or a history of seizures.
- Avoid taking with dairy products, as it may reduce the absorption of Floxabid DS.
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended as a first-line treatment for pediatric patients.
Overdose Effects
- Overdose can lead to seizures, confusion, renal and hepatic impairment, and crystalluria. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.
Therapeutic Class
- Quinolone antibiotics, Anti-diarrheal, and Antimicrobial agents.
