Pharmacology

Cyclobenzaprine, a centrally-acting skeletal muscle relaxant, is chemically similar to tricyclic antidepressants, sharing comparable properties. It targets the brain stem to decrease tonic-somatic motor activity, affecting both the α and δ motor systems. Flexor serves as an adjunct in the symptomatic management of painful muscle spasms linked to musculoskeletal issues.

Dosage & Administration

• Typical Dosage: 5-10 mg orally, three times daily, not exceeding a total of 60 mg per day. Treatment duration should not exceed 2 to 3 weeks.
• Elderly Patients: Begin with a 5 mg dose, adjusting slowly as needed.
• Hepatic Impairment: Use with caution in those with mild hepatic impairment, starting at 5 mg and titrating slowly. Not recommended for moderate to severe impairment.
• Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in children under 15 years have not been established.

Interactions

Flexor can interact dangerously with MAO inhibitors. It may also amplify the effects of alcohol, barbiturates, and other CNS depressants.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to any ingredient in this product.
• Concurrent use of MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of their discontinuation.
• Recent recovery phase from myocardial infarction.
• Patients with arrhythmias, heart block, conduction disturbances, or congestive heart failure.
• Hyperthyroidism.

Side Effects

Common adverse effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, and dizziness, with a lower incidence reported in surveillance programs compared to controlled clinical studies.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B. Cyclobenzaprine should only be used during pregnancy when absolutely necessary. Caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Due to its atropine-like effects, Flexor should be used cautiously in individuals with a history of urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, or elevated intraocular pressure, especially those on anticholinergic medications.

Overdose Effects

Though rare, overdose can lead to fatal outcomes. Symptoms may arise rapidly, necessitating immediate hospital monitoring.
