Pharmacology:

Vitamin E functions as a potent antioxidant, safeguarding vital cellular components like polyunsaturated fatty acids, vitamin A, and vitamin C from oxidative damage. In adults and children with low serum tocopherol concentrations, various complications like creatinuria, muscle weakness, and increased hemolysis risk have been identified.

  • Age-related Macular Degeneration: 400-600 IU daily
  • Heart Disease (enhancing nitrates’ effectiveness): 200 IU three times daily

Contraindications:

Avoid in patients allergic to vitamin E or with rare hereditary fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, or sucrose-isomaltase insufficiency.

Side Effects:

High doses (>1000 IU daily) may lead to diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Pregnancy & Lactation:

High-dose vitamin E safety during pregnancy is uncertain, especially in the first trimester. Avoid use during lactation due to insufficient data on excretion in breast milk.

Precautions & Warnings:

Monitor prothrombin time and INR in vitamin K-deficient patients or those on anticoagulant therapy. Consider thrombosis risk, especially in patients predisposed or taking estrogen-containing contraceptives.

Overdose Effects:

Doses exceeding 1000 IU daily may cause transient gastrointestinal disturbances.

Therapeutic Class:

Evit falls under the category of Herbal and Nutraceuticals, specifically Vitamin-E Preparations.

Storage Conditions:

Store in a dry, cool place away from light and heat, and ensure it’s inaccessible to children.
