Ecoren

Indications

Ecoren is a topical antifungal treatment indicated for:

• Tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis caused by fungi like Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton tonsurans, Microsporum canis, Microsporum audouini, Microsporum gypseum, and Epidermophyton floccosum.
• Cutaneous candidiasis (skin fungal infections) and tinea versicolor.

Always use as prescribed by a registered healthcare professional.

Pharmacology

Econazole Nitrate works by disrupting fungal cell functions. It interferes with oxidative enzymes in fungi, leading to a harmful buildup of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) within the cells. Additionally, it inhibits the formation of ergosterol, a crucial component of the fungal cell wall, thereby weakening and destroying the fungus.

Dosage & Administration

• Econazole Vaginal Tablet: Insert one tablet deep into the vagina at bedtime for three consecutive nights. Continue treatment even during menstruation. For recurrent infections, a longer treatment course may be necessary.
• Econazole 30 gm Cream (Vaginal Application): Use the provided applicator to fill with econazole cream, then insert deep into the vagina once or twice daily at bedtime.
• Econazole 10 gm Cream (Topical Application): Apply a thin layer of cream once or twice daily to the affected area until improvement is seen.
• For tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and tinea versicolor, apply the cream once daily. For cutaneous candidiasis, apply it twice daily (morning and evening). Most patients experience symptom relief within 2–3 days, with clinical improvement usually seen shortly after starting treatment. For optimal results, continue treatment for 2 weeks for candidiasis and up to 4 weeks for tinea pedis.

Interactions

• Warfarin: Concomitant use of econazole and warfarin may enhance the anticoagulant effects of warfarin. Close monitoring of International Normalized Ratio (INR) and prothrombin time is advised, especially if the cream is applied to large body areas or under occlusion.
• Carcinogenicity: Long-term studies on the carcinogenic potential of econazole nitrate have not been conducted.

Contraindications

Ecoren should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to econazole nitrate or any of its ingredients.

Side Effects

Side effects are rare but may include:

• Burning, itching, stinging, and redness (erythema) at the application site.
• A rare case of a pruritic rash has been reported in some users.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Econazole nitrate is classified as Pregnancy Category C. It should only be used during the first trimester when necessary, and in the second and third trimesters, it should be used only when clearly needed for the patient’s well-being.
• Lactation: It is unknown if econazole nitrate is excreted in human milk. Use with caution in nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

• For external use only. Do not apply to the eyes or mucous membranes. Avoid ophthalmic use.
• If signs of sensitivity or chemical irritation occur, discontinue use immediately.
• If Ecoren Cream comes into contact with the eyes, rinse thoroughly with water.

Overdose Effects

There have been no reported cases of overdose with Ecoren cream.
