Indications for Use
Econate VT is designed for topical application and is effective for:
- Treating tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), tinea cruris (jock itch), and tinea corporis (ringworm) caused by various fungi, including Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Trichophyton tonsurans, Microsporum canis, Microsporum audouini, Microsporum gypseum, and Epidermophyton floccosum.
- Addressing cutaneous candidiasis (skin yeast infections) and tinea versicolor.
Always use this medication as directed by a registered healthcare professional.
Pharmacological Action
Econazole Nitrate disrupts fungal oxidative enzymes, leading to a harmful buildup of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Additionally, it inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes.
Dosage & Administration
- Econazole Vaginal Tablets: Insert one tablet deep into the vagina at bedtime for three consecutive nights. Continue treatment even if menstruation occurs. While three nights is typically sufficient, longer treatment may be necessary for women with recurrent vaginal infections.
- Econazole 30 gm Cream: Use the supplied applicator to insert cream deep into the vagina once or twice daily at bedtime.
- Econazole 10 gm Cream: Apply a small amount to the affected area once or twice daily until symptoms improve.
For conditions like tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, and tinea versicolor, apply sufficient cream to cover the affected areas once daily, and twice daily for cutaneous candidiasis. Most patients experience relief quickly, with clinical improvements often visible shortly after starting treatment. However, it’s important to treat candidal infections and tinea cruris/corporis for at least two weeks, and tinea pedis for a month, to minimize the risk of recurrence. If there is no improvement after this period, re-evaluate the diagnosis. Patients with tinea versicolor typically see clearing after two weeks of treatment.
Always follow the guidance of a registered healthcare professional when using this medication.
Drug Interactions
- Warfarin: Concurrent use of econazole and warfarin may enhance anticoagulant effects. Cases have been reported where the product was applied under occlusion, to large areas of skin, or to the genital area, increasing systemic absorption. Patients should have their International Normalized Ratio (INR) and/or prothrombin time monitored in such cases.
Carcinogenicity Studies
Long-term animal studies assessing the carcinogenic potential of econazole have not been conducted.
Contraindications
Econazole is not recommended for individuals with a known hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Side Effects
Clinical trials indicated that approximately 3% of patients using Econate VT 1% cream reported side effects, primarily including burning, itching, stinging, and erythema. A pruritic rash has also been documented.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Intravaginal use in humans has not shown adverse reproductive effects or prolonged gestation linked to econazole nitrate therapy. It falls under Pregnancy Category C, meaning it should only be used in the first trimester when deemed essential by a physician. Use during the second and third trimesters should be based on clear medical necessity. The excretion of econazole nitrate in breast milk is unknown, so caution is advised for nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
Econate VT is strictly for external use and not intended for ophthalmic application. Discontinue use if signs of sensitivity or chemical irritation occur. Avoid getting the cream in the eyes.
Overdose Effects
There have been no reported cases of overdose with Econate VT.
