Indications

Description
Dormitol is a rapid-onset sleep aid with short duration, also possessing anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle-relaxant properties.
Pharmacology
Benzodiazepines such as Dormitol enhance the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, resulting in sedation, muscle relaxation, and amnesia.
Dosage & Administration
Oral Dosage:
- Adults: 7.5-15 mg daily.
- Elderly or debilitated patients: 7.5 mg.
- Premedication: 15 mg, 30-60 minutes pre-procedure.
Intravenous Administration:
- Endoscopic or Cardiovascular Procedures: 2.5 mg in healthy adults (adjust for severe illness or elderly).
- Induction of Anesthesia: 10-15 mg.
Intramuscular Administration:
- Adult: 0.07-0.1 mg/kg.
- Children: 0.15-0.20 mg/kg.
- Elderly or debilitated patients: 0.025-0.05 mg/kg.
Rectal Administration (for children):
- Preoperative sedation: 0.35-0.45 mg/kg, 20-30 minutes pre-anesthesia.
Interactions
Dormitol may potentiate the central sedative effects of various medications, including neuroleptics, antidepressants, analgesics, and antiepileptic drugs.
Contraindications
Avoid Dormitol in patients with severe respiratory or hepatic insufficiency, myasthenia gravis, sleep apnea syndrome, or known hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines.
Side Effects
Common side effects include initial drowsiness, confusion, fatigue, headache, and muscle weakness. Respiratory depression, fluctuations in vital signs, and apnea may occur with parenteral administration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use Dormitol with caution during pregnancy and avoid breastfeeding while taking it due to potential transfer into breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Administer Dormitol IV slowly to minimize adverse reactions.
Overdose Effects
Extreme overdoses may lead to coma, cardiorespiratory depression, and apnea. Flumazenil can be used as an antidote.
