Description
Dermasim is a broad-spectrum antifungal cream that effectively treats skin infections caused by a variety of dermatophytes, yeasts, moulds, and other fungal species. Dermasim also has activity against some gram-positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococci and Trichomonas. As an imidazole derivative, it disrupts the fungal cell wall by inhibiting ergosterol synthesis. This mechanism alters the permeability of the fungal cell membrane, and at higher concentrations, it can also cause direct damage to the membrane.
Pharmacology
The active ingredient, Clotrimazole, works by interfering with the synthesis of ergosterol, a vital component of the fungal cell membrane. Inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis compromises the integrity of the cell membrane, preventing fungal growth. Besides its antifungal action, Clotrimazole also inhibits certain calcium channels, which contributes to its broader pharmacological effects, aside from its mycotic activity.
Dosage & Administration
- Clotrimazole Cream: Apply a thin layer to the affected areas 2-3 times daily. A small amount is usually sufficient for areas about the size of a palm. Treatment duration varies by condition:
- Dermatomycoses: 3-4 weeks.
- Candida infections (vulvitis, balanitis): 1-2 weeks.
- Erythrasma and Pityriasis Versicolor: 3 weeks.
- For foot infections, continue treatment for 2 weeks after signs of infection have disappeared to prevent relapse.
- Clotrimazole cream is odorless, easy to wash off, and does not stain clothes.
- Clotrimazole Topical Solution: Apply sparingly 2-3 times a day to the affected areas, rubbing in gently.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Clotrimazole or any component of the formulation.
Side Effects
Dermasim is typically well-tolerated. Minor local irritation or a burning sensation may occur in some cases, but these symptoms are generally not harmful. Systemic side effects are rare due to topical application.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Clotrimazole should be used during pregnancy only when deemed necessary by a healthcare professional. There is limited data on the safety of Clotrimazole during lactation, so it should be used cautiously.
Storage Conditions
Store Dermasim below 25°C, away from light and moisture. Keep out of the reach of children.
