Indications
Decomit Plus is prescribed for managing asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
For Asthma: Decomit Plus is used as a regular treatment option where a combination of inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist is recommended.
For COPD: This inhaler is intended for the symptomatic relief of severe COPD in patients with a history of frequent exacerbations despite ongoing therapy with long-acting bronchodilators.
Pharmacology
Decomit Plus combines Beclomethasone Dipropionate BP and Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate BP into an environmentally friendly hydrofluoroalkane (HFA) based inhaler. Unlike chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants that contribute to ozone depletion, this inhaler uses a safe alternative.
Beclomethasone Dipropionate is a potent synthetic corticosteroid with significant anti-inflammatory properties. When inhaled, it delivers powerful glucocorticoid effects directly to the lungs, minimizing systemic side effects.
Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate is a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist known for its rapid bronchodilating effects. When inhaled, it acts swiftly in the lungs to relax the muscles and alleviate symptoms, with minimal systemic absorption.
Dosage
For Asthma:
- Maintenance Therapy: Adults and adolescents (18 years and older) should use one or two inhalations twice daily, with a maximum of 4 inhalations per day.
- Maintenance and Reliever Therapy: For daily maintenance, use one inhalation twice daily. If symptoms persist, an additional inhalation may be taken. The maximum daily dose is 8 inhalations.
For COPD: Use 2 inhalations twice daily.
Administration
Proper use of the inhaler is crucial for effective treatment. Follow these steps to ensure you are using the inhaler correctly:
- Remove the cap.
- Shake the inhaler vigorously (at least six times) before each use.
- If the inhaler is new or hasn’t been used for over a week, shake it well and release one puff into the air to ensure proper function.
- Exhale fully and hold the inhaler upright.
- Place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close your lips around it.
- While breathing in deeply and slowly through your mouth, press down firmly on the canister to release the medication.
- Remove the inhaler from your mouth and hold your breath for at least 10 seconds or as long as comfortable.
- If more than one inhalation is prescribed, wait 1 minute between puffs. Shake the inhaler and repeat steps 4-7.
- After use, replace the cap and rinse your mouth with water.
To check your technique, use a mirror to ensure you’re not seeing a white mist during inhalation, which may indicate improper use. If this occurs, repeat the steps carefully.
Instructions for Cleaning the Inhaler: Clean your inhaler weekly by removing the canister and rinsing the plastic parts in warm water. Do not get the canister wet. Dry the parts thoroughly and reassemble.
Always follow your doctor’s advice regarding medication use.
