Pharmacology
Olopatadine, an antihistamine, works by blocking histamine, which helps reduce allergy symptoms. It effectively addresses sneezing, itching, and nasal congestion caused by allergies.
- Mechanism of Action:
Olopatadine stabilizes mast cells, preventing histamine release, and acts as a selective H1 receptor antagonist, reducing inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and cytokines. - Pharmacokinetics:
- Absorption: Peak plasma concentrations occur 30 minutes to 1 hour after intranasal use.
- Distribution: Olopatadine binds moderately to proteins (about 55%).
- Metabolism: Minimal metabolism with six minor plasma metabolites.
- Elimination: Half-life is 8–12 hours, mainly excreted via urine.
