Indications
Comprid, a medication belonging to the sulphonylurea group, is prescribed for the management of elevated blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes Mellitus. It is recommended when dietary adjustments, physical activity, and weight management alone are insufficient in maintaining optimal blood sugar levels.
Pharmacology
Gliclazide, a second-generation sulfonylurea, exhibits hypoglycaemic properties by stimulating insulin release from pancreatic β-cells. It achieves this by facilitating Ca+2 transport across β-cell membranes and reducing hepatic glucose output.
Dosage & Administration
Film-coated tablet: The typical initial dose ranges from 40 to 80 mg daily, with the possibility of increasing up to 320 mg daily in divided doses if necessary. Administration should precede meals. Gliclazide is not indicated for pediatric use.
Modified release preparation: Dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional based on blood sugar levels. The recommended daily intake ranges from one to four tablets (maximum 120 mg) taken once daily with breakfast. Adjustments in dosage may be necessary due to changes in external factors or improved blood sugar control.
Interaction
Inform your healthcare provider of any concurrent medications. Comprid may interact with various drugs, potentially affecting blood sugar levels. Notable interactions include other oral antidiabetic medications, antibiotics, antihypertensive drugs, and antidepressants.
Precautions & Warnings
Before initiating Comprid, consult your doctor. Adherence to treatment plans, including dietary modifications and exercise, is crucial for managing blood sugar levels effectively. Regular monitoring of blood sugar and glycated haemoglobin levels is recommended, especially during the initial treatment phase.
Low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) may occur under various circumstances, including irregular meal patterns, fasting, malnutrition, or changes in diet or physical activity. Symptoms range from mild (headache, hunger) to severe (confusion, unconsciousness). Always carry a source of sugar for prompt management of hypoglycaemia.
High blood sugar (hyperglycaemia) may manifest as thirst, frequent urination, and dry mouth. Avoid alcohol consumption, which can disrupt diabetes control.
Comprid is contraindicated in individuals with allergies to sulfonylureas, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe kidney or liver disease, and during breastfeeding.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Comprid include hypoglycaemia. Rare adverse reactions may include liver or skin disorders, blood abnormalities, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Report any side effects to your healthcare provider promptly.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Gliclazide is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult your doctor for alternative treatment options.
General Instructions
Take Comprid as prescribed by your doctor, typically 30 minutes before breakfast. Regularly monitor blood sugar levels and carry a source of sugar to manage hypoglycaemia. Avoid missing doses, but if forgotten, take the next dose as scheduled. Do not double dose to compensate for a missed one.
