Indications

Colicon serves as an effective remedy for various conditions, including:

  • Functional bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Urinary incontinence due to unstable detrusor muscle
  • Infantile colic
  • Gastrointestinal (GIT) spasms
  • Colicky abdominal pain

Pharmacological Overview

Colicon contains dicycloverine hydrochloride, renowned for its antispasmodic and anticholinergic properties. This compound, chemically known as [Bicyclohexyl-]1-carboxylic acid, 2-(diethylammo) ethyl ester hydrochloride, effectively alleviates smooth muscle spasms within the gastrointestinal tract. Administered through intramuscular injection, it targets cholinergic receptors on involuntary gut muscles, blocking certain chemicals responsible for muscle contraction. This mechanism promotes muscle relaxation, offering relief from colic-induced pain and spasms.

Dosage and Administration

For oral administration:

  • Adults: 10 to 20 mg thrice daily.
  • Children (over 6 months): 5 to 10 mg thrice daily.

For injectable use:

  • Adults: Administered intramuscularly, not intravenously. The recommended dose is 80 mg daily, divided into four equal doses.

Initiate oral dicycloverine hydrochloride promptly, reserving intramuscular application for short durations, not exceeding 1 or 2 days. Pediatric dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional.

Side Effects

Potential side effects may include insomnia, mydriasis, cycloplegia, increased ocular tension, urinary hesitancy, palpitations, and dyspnea.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Dicycloverine falls under Pregnancy Category B, exhibiting neither teratogenic nor embryocidal effects in animal studies. However, its use during pregnancy should be considered only when essential. Data regarding its secretion into breast milk is unavailable, thus caution is advised for lactating mothers.

Precautions and Warnings

Exercise caution when administering to patients with autonomic neuropathy, hepatic or renal disorders, ulcerative colitis, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac tachyarrhythmia, hiatal hernia, or known/suspected prostatic hypertrophy.

Overdose Effects

Overdose reactions with dicycloverine are rare but may include headache, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, dilated pupils, dry skin, dizziness, dry mouth, swallowing difficulties, and CNS stimulation.

Therapeutic Classification

Colicon belongs to the class of anticholinergics/anti-spasmodics.
