Ciclopirox Olamine |
Indications
Clopirox Cream serves as an effective topical treatment for various dermal infections, including Tinea pedis, Tinea cruris, and Tinea corporis caused by fungi such as Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, and Microsporum canis. It also targets candidiasis (moniliasis) caused by Candida albicans and Tinea (pityriasis) versicolor due to Malassezia furfur. Additionally, Clopirox Cream exhibits potency against certain gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Its anti-inflammatory properties render it suitable for managing mild to moderate inflammatory fungal infections independently.
Pharmacology
Ciclopirox Olamine, the active ingredient in Clopirox Cream, is a synthetic broad-spectrum antifungal agent. It effectively inhibits the growth of pathogenic dermatophytes, yeasts, and Malassezia furfur. In vitro studies have shown its fungicidal activity against various fungal strains, including Trichophyton rubrum, Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum canis, and Candida albicans. Ciclopirox Olamine’s mode of action primarily involves cellular depletion of essential substrates and ions, leading to growth inhibition or cell death. Moreover, it exhibits antibacterial properties against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Its anti-inflammatory effects are demonstrated through the inhibition of prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, as well as the suppression of 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase formation.
Dosage & Administration
For optimal results, gently massage Ciclopirox Cream onto the affected and surrounding skin areas twice daily for a duration of four weeks. Clinical improvement, including relief from pruritus and other symptoms, is typically observed within the first week of treatment. If no improvement is noted after four weeks, reassessment of the diagnosis is recommended. Patients with Tinea versicolor usually experience clinical and mycological clearance after two weeks of treatment.
Contraindications
Individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to any components of Ciclopirox Olamine cream should avoid its use.
Side Effects
Clopirox cream is generally well tolerated, with a low incidence of adverse reactions reported in clinical trials.
