Ceftron 250 IV

Indications

Ceftron is indicated for treating major infections such as lower respiratory tract infections, acute bacterial otitis media, skin and skin structure infections, urinary tract infections, gonorrhea, bacterial septicemia, bone and joint infections, meningitis, and for preventing postoperative infections and infections associated with surgery.

Pharmacology

Ceftriaxone, the active ingredient in Ceftron, is a potent broad-spectrum antibiotic. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, effectively targeting a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. Ceftriaxone boasts a relatively long plasma elimination half-life, making it suitable for once-daily dosing in most patients.

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose of Ceftron is 1 to 2 grams per day, administered intravenously or intramuscularly. Dosages vary depending on the condition being treated, ranging from pneumonia to surgical prophylaxis. Pediatric dosages are based on body weight and range from 50 to 75 mg/kg per day.

Administration

Ceftron is prepared for intramuscular or intravenous injection, with specific guidelines for solution preparation and administration. The injection should be administered over a specified period to minimize the risk of adverse effects.

Interaction

No significant drug interactions have been reported with Ceftron.

Contraindications

Side Effects

While generally well-tolerated, Ceftron may cause gastrointestinal, cutaneous, hematologic, hepatic, and CNS reactions. Local phlebitis is rare but can occur following intravenous administration.

Ceftron’s safety during pregnancy is not established, and caution is advised during lactation due to low concentrations excreted in human milk.

Precautions & Warnings

Anaphylactic shock and gallbladder abnormalities are rare but possible with Ceftron use, requiring immediate attention and management.

Use in Special Populations

Ceftron is not recommended for neonates, especially premature newborns.

Overdose Effects

There is no specific antidote for Ceftron overdose; treatment is symptomatic.
