Indications
Ceftoril is used for treating mild-to-moderate infections caused by specific bacteria. It is effective in:
- Acute Bacterial Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis: Caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pneumoniae (penicillin-susceptible strains).
- Acute Bacterial Otitis Media: Due to Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, or Streptococcus pyogenes.
- Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis: Caused by Streptococcus pyogenes.
Pharmacology
Ceftoril, a semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, is effective in treating infections by binding to bacterial cell wall proteins, inhibiting cell-wall synthesis, and exerting bactericidal effects.
Dosage & Administration

Interaction
Ceftoril’s pharmacokinetics are unaffected by theophylline and antacids, but ranitidine increases its Cmax and AUC.
Contraindications
Do not use Ceftoril in patients with known allergies to cephalosporins. It is not recommended for managing premature labor or threatened abortion during early pregnancy.
Mode of Action
Ceftoril, a beta-lactam antibiotic, works by targeting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death.
Precautions
Monitor for the development of resistant organisms with prolonged use. Adjust dosage in patients with renal insufficiency and use with caution in those with a history of gastrointestinal issues, particularly colitis.
Use in Special Populations
- Renal Impairment:
- CrCl 5 to 29 ml/min: 100 mg orally once daily.
- CrCl 30 to 49 ml/min: 200 mg orally once daily.
- Hepatic Impairment: No dosage adjustment needed.
Therapeutic Class
Third-generation Cephalosporins.
