Indications
Cefopen is indicated for treating various infections caused by susceptible organisms, including Respiratory Tract Infections, Peritonitis & Other Intra-abdominal Infections, Bacterial Septicemia, Skin and Skin Structures Infections, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, Endometritis & Other Infections of the Female Genital Tract, Urinary Tract Infections, and Enterococcal Infections.
Pharmacology
Cefoperazone, a bactericidal Cephalosporin antibiotic, effectively inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, demonstrating resistance to most beta-lactamases. It remains active against a broad spectrum of aerobic & anaerobic, Gram-positive & Gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage & Administration
Administered via IM or IV injection, the dosage for adults typically ranges from 2 to 4 grams per day, divided equally every 12 hours. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for severe infections or those caused by less sensitive organisms.
Contraindications
Cefoperazone is contraindicated in patients with known allergy to Cephalosporin-class antibiotics.
Side Effects
Hypersensitivity reactions, including skin reactions, drug fever, or changes in Coombs’ test, may occur. These reactions are more prevalent in patients with a history of allergies.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Classified as Pregnancy Category B, caution is advised during pregnancy, and low concentrations are excreted in human milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Cefopen is extensively excreted in bile, with increased serum half-life in patients with hepatic disease or biliary obstruction. Monitoring of serum concentrations is recommended in such cases.
Use in Special Populations
Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established, and caution is advised in the elderly, with dosage adjustments based on hepatic, renal, or cardiac function.
Therapeutic Class
Cefopen belongs to the third generation of Cephalosporins, known for their efficacy against a wide range of bacterial infections.
Reconstitution
Cefopen for IV or IM use should be reconstituted with a compatible solution, ensuring complete solubilization before administration.
Storage Conditions
Store Cefopen in a dry place below 25°C, protected from light before reconstitution. The reconstituted solution may be stored for up to 24 hours at room temperature.
