Pharmacology
Ceevit Forte contains Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), an essential nutrient crucial for various bodily functions. It supports tissue growth and repair, adrenal gland function, and boosts immunity. As an antioxidant, it protects against environmental pollutants and infections, reducing cellular damage. It also acts as a coenzyme essential for wound healing, drug metabolism, and cholesterol and folic acid metabolism. Vitamin C supports healthy hair, skin, and overall well-being.
Dosage & Administration
For oral tablets:
- Prevention of scurvy: 1 tablet daily
- Treatment of scurvy: 1-2 tablets daily, adjusted based on severity
- Stroke risk reduction in the elderly: 1-2 tablets daily
- Other conditions: 1 tablet daily or as directed by a physician Maximum safe daily dose is 2000 mg, taken in divided doses.
For oral sachets:
- 1 sachet daily or as directed by a registered physician Maximum daily dose: 2000 mg (4 sachets)
Parenteral Administration
Vitamin C is primarily administered orally. When oral intake is not possible or malabsorption is suspected, it can be administered intramuscularly (IM), intravenously (IV), or subcutaneously. Intramuscular administration is preferred for optimal utilization. For IV injection, dilution in a large volume parenteral solution is recommended to minimize adverse reactions.
Interactions
Ascorbic acid may interact unfavorably with certain medications including aminophylline and erythromycin. It enhances the absorption of iron and increases the half-life of paracetamol.
Side Effects
Ceevit Forte is generally well-tolerated; high doses may cause gastrointestinal issues and iron over-absorption. Special precautions are necessary in patients with specific conditions like glucose-6 phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Normal doses are safe during pregnancy and lactation; high doses should be avoided as they may lead to complications such as fetal abortion.
Precautions & Warnings
Megadoses (over 1000 mg daily) during pregnancy can lead to neonatal scurvy. Ceevit DS is contraindicated in patients with hyperoxaluria. It may interfere with certain analytical tests.
