Indications

Caterol is prescribed for managing airflow obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

Description

Caterol is a long-acting β2-adrenergic agonist that serves as a maintenance bronchodilator for COPD patients. Upon inhalation, it acts locally in the lungs to alleviate symptoms by stimulating β2-adrenoceptors, leading to increased cyclic AMP levels and smooth muscle relaxation.

Dosage & Administration

Caterol capsules are intended for oral inhalation only and must not be swallowed. The recommended dosage is one capsule (75 mcg, 150 mcg, or 300 mcg) inhaled once daily at the same time. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered, but do not exceed one dose in 24 hours. No dosage adjustments are needed for elderly or mild to moderate hepatic and renal impairment. Not for pediatric use.
Consult a registered healthcare professional before use.

Interaction

Caterol may interact with adrenergic drugs, xanthine derivatives, steroids, and diuretics, potentially enhancing hypokalemic effects. Caution is advised when used with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, or other drugs that prolong the QTc interval. Concurrent use with beta-blockers may interfere with the efficacy of both medications.

Contraindications

Caterol is contraindicated for asthma management without concurrent long-term control medication and in individuals with hypersensitivity to Indacaterol or any formulation components.

Side Effects

Common adverse effects include cough, nasopharyngitis, headache, nausea, and oropharyngeal pain. Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions, paradoxical bronchospasm, tachycardia, pruritus, and dizziness may occur.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category C: Use only if the benefits outweigh potential risks. The safety of Indacaterol during breastfeeding is not established; caution is advised when administered to nursing mothers.

Precautions & Warnings

Serious breathing issues may arise with long-acting inhaled beta agonists like Caterol. It is not approved for asthma treatment and should be used cautiously in individuals with a history of such problems.

Overdose Effects

Overdose may lead to excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation, with symptoms including angina, hypertension, tachycardia, arrhythmias, nervousness, tremor, and insomnia. Severe cases can result in cardiac arrest or death.

Therapeutic Class

Long-acting selective β-adrenoceptor stimulants.

Storage Conditions

Store Caterol capsules in their blister pack and remove only before use. Keep in a cool, dry place out of reach of children.
