Indications:
Candex is an antifungal antibiotic effective against a broad spectrum of yeasts and yeast-like fungi, including Candida albicans. It is prescribed for preventing and treating Candida infections in the oral cavity, esophagus, and intestinal tract. Candex also serves as a prophylactic measure against oral candidiasis in infants born to mothers with vaginal candidiasis, and it helps prevent Candida overgrowth during courses of broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Pharmacology:
Nystatin, the active ingredient in Candex, is an antifungal antibiotic that acts by binding to sterols in the fungal cell membrane, disrupting its function as a selective barrier. This action leads to the loss of potassium and other cellular constituents. Nystatin is minimally absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Dosage & Administration:
Children:
- For intestinal and oral candidiasis (thrush): Administer 100,000 units (1 ml) into the mouth four times daily. Extended contact with the affected area before swallowing enhances efficacy.
- For prophylaxis in newborns: Recommended dose is 100,000 units (1 ml) once daily or as directed by a physician.
Adults:
- For intestinal or esophageal candidiasis treatment: Take 500,000 units (5 ml) orally 3 or 4 times daily. Dosage may be doubled if necessary.
- For prophylaxis of intestinal candidiasis: Use 1,000,000 units (10 ml) daily.
- For prophylaxis during broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy: Take 1,000,000 units (10 ml) daily.
- For treating oral infections and dental sores: Administer 100,000 units (1 ml) suspension into the mouth four times daily.
Elderly:
- Elderly patients with intestinal candidiasis who cannot swallow tablets should take 500,000 units (5 ml) suspension four times daily, as prescribed.
Contraindications:
There are no known contraindications to the use of Nystatin.
Side Effects:
High doses of Candex may occasionally cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. No systemic effects or allergic reactions have been reported with oral administration.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
Due to negligible absorption from the gastrointestinal tract, Nystatin does not require special precautions during pregnancy or lactation.
Precautions & Warnings:
Since absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is minimal, no specific precautions are necessary during pregnancy and lactation.
Therapeutic Class:
Candex belongs to the therapeutic class of drugs for subcutaneous mycoses and those used in vaginal and vulval conditions.
Storage Conditions:
Store Candex in a cool, dry place protected from light, and keep it out of reach of children.
