Indications
Burna cream serves as an essential remedy for:
- Topical prophylaxis against bacterial colonization and infection in burn wounds.
- Management of certain contaminated or infection-prone wounds, aside from burns.
Pharmacology
The antibacterial action of Silver Sulfadiazine involves structural changes in bacterial cell membranes, weakening their viability. It targets a wide spectrum of microorganisms, including gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens, aiding in wound healing. Minimal systemic absorption occurs in adults, with most absorbed amounts excreted in urine.
Dosage & Administration
Apply Silver Sulfadiazine over clean burn wounds, ensuring constant coverage. Reapply once to twice daily, maintaining a thickness of approximately 1/16 inches. Continue treatment until satisfactory healing occurs or grafting is feasible, with adjustments made based on patient response.
Interaction
Exercise caution with enzymatic debriding agents, as Burna may inactivate them. Monitor serum levels of oral hypoglycemic agents and phenytoin in patients with extensive burns to prevent potential interactions.
Contraindications
Avoid use in patients hypersensitive to Silver Sulfadiazine or its components. It is not recommended for pregnant women near term, premature infants, or newborns under 2 months old.
Side Effects
Rare occurrences of transient leukopenia and skin reactions have been reported with Burna therapy. Monitor patients for adverse reactions and discontinue use if necessary.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Consider the use of Silver Sulfadiazine during pregnancy only when clearly justified. Exercise caution during lactation, weighing the benefits against potential risks.
Precautions & Warnings
Monitor hepatic and renal function in patients at risk of accumulation due to impaired elimination. Be cautious when using topical proteolytic enzymes alongside Burna, as silver may interfere with their activity.
Therapeutic Class
Belongs to the class of topical antibiotic preparations.
Storage Conditions
Keep Burna cream below 30°C, away from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.
