Indications
This eye drop formulation is designed to effectively reduce elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients diagnosed with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Pharmacology
This eye drop combines two active ingredients: Brimonidine Tartrate and Timolol Maleate. Brimonidine Tartrate acts as a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, offering a dual mechanism of action by decreasing aqueous humor production and enhancing non-pressure-dependent uveoscleral outflow. Timolol Maleate, a β-adrenergic receptor antagonist, effectively lowers IOP by reducing the production of aqueous humor without significant intrinsic sympathomimetic, myocardial depressant, or local anesthetic (membrane-stabilizing) effects. The synergy of these two agents provides a rapid onset of action, with peak ocular hypotensive effects typically observed within two hours post-administration.
Dosage & Administration
Administer 1 drop into the affected eye(s) twice daily.
Please follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding medication use.
Interactions
Comprehensive studies on specific drug interactions have not been conducted for this formulation.
Contraindications
This eye drop is contraindicated in individuals with hypersensitivity to any ingredient in the formulation. It is also unsuitable for patients with bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sinus bradycardia, second or third-degree atrioventricular block, overt cardiac failure, or cardiogenic shock.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include allergic conjunctivitis, conjunctival folliculosis, conjunctival hyperemia, eye pruritus, and sensations of burning or stinging in the eye.
Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no adequate and well-controlled studies available for pregnant women. Use this eye drop during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. Timolol has been detected in human breast milk, but the excretion of Brimonidine Tartrate in breast milk is unknown. Decisions regarding breastfeeding should consider the importance of the medication to the mother.
Precautions & Warnings
As with other ophthalmic agents applied topically, systemic absorption may occur. Due to the presence of Timolol, patients may experience cardiovascular and pulmonary side effects similar to those seen with systemic beta-blockers. Exercise caution when treating individuals with severe or unstable cardiovascular or pulmonary conditions.
Use in Special Populations
- Children: Safety and effectiveness in children under 2 years of age have not been established.
- Elderly Patients: No significant differences in safety or effectiveness have been noted between elderly patients and other adults.
