Indications
The Bisoprolol & Amlodipine combination is prescribed for managing hypertension as a substitute therapy for patients effectively controlled with the individual products administered concurrently at equivalent doses as separate tablets.
Pharmacology
This combination includes Amlodipine, a calcium antagonist that selectively inhibits calcium ion influx into vascular smooth and cardiac muscle cells, primarily reducing peripheral vascular resistance and blood pressure. Bisoprolol Fumarate, a beta1-selective adrenoceptor blocker, complements this action without significant effects on beta2 receptors involved in bronchial and metabolic regulation.
Dosage & Administration
Recommended dosage is one tablet daily for patients adequately controlled on separate doses of the individual components.
Interactions
Exercise caution with certain medications like verapamil, diltiazem, and others that may interact adversely with this combination.
Contraindications
Avoid use in conditions such as acute heart failure, severe bronchial asthma, and certain cardiac conduction abnormalities.
Side Effects
Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, and gastrointestinal disturbances, while less common effects could involve mood changes or visual disturbances.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Precautions & Warnings
Special care is needed in patients with heart failure or impaired liver function. Beta-blockers should be used cautiously in individuals with obstructive airways diseases.
Use in Special Populations
Elderly patients can generally use standard doses, but adjustments may be necessary for those with liver or kidney impairment.
Overdose Effects
Symptoms of overdose may include severe bradycardia or hypotension, requiring supportive care and discontinuation of treatment.
Therapeutic Class
Anti-hypertensive agent.
