Indications
Beclometasone 50, 100 & 250 HFA Inhaler is indicated for the prophylactic management of mild, moderate, or severe asthma in both adults and children. It offers preventative treatment for asthma by providing effective anti-inflammatory action in the lungs, with a lower incidence and severity of adverse effects compared to systemic corticosteroids. Suitable for patients with mild, moderate, or severe asthma symptoms, including those who are dependent on systemic corticosteroids for symptom control.
Pharmacology
Beclomethasone dipropionate produces anti-inflammatory and vasoconstrictor effects, targeting multiple cell types and mediators involved in inflammation. It is metabolized into its active form, beclomethasone-17-monopropionate (B-17-MP), which exhibits high topical anti-inflammatory activity.
Dosage
Adults should start with 200 micrograms twice daily, which may be adjusted based on individual response. Children can start with 50 to 100 micrograms, administered two to four times daily, with adjustments made according to response.
Administration
Correct inhaler technique is crucial for effective treatment, ensuring that the medication reaches the lungs optimally. Patients should follow step-by-step instructions for inhaler use, including shaking the inhaler, proper breathing technique, and regular cleaning.
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the components, and caution is advised in those with active or quiescent pulmonary tuberculosis.
Side Effects
Systemic effects may occur, particularly at high doses or prolonged use, including Cushing’s syndrome, growth retardation, and decreased bone mineral density.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety during pregnancy is inadequately studied, and caution is advised during breastfeeding due to potential risks to the mother and baby.
Precautions & Warnings
Patients should be educated on proper inhaler use and the importance of regular, daily use for optimal benefits.
Therapeutic Class
Belongs to the class of respiratory corticosteroids, targeting inflammation in the lungs.
Storage Conditions
Store below 30°C, protected from sunlight and heat, and keep out of reach of children. Avoid breaking or puncturing the canister.
