Indications
The Salbutamol Inhaler is designed to alleviate reversible airway obstruction caused by bronchitis and emphysema. It is also effective in managing bronchospasm associated with bronchial asthma.
Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm: The Salbutamol Inhaler is suitable for treating acute episodes of dyspnea and can be used preventively before engaging in physical activity to avoid exercise-induced asthma.
Pharmacology
Salbutamol functions as a selective agonist for the β2-adrenoceptors. While it primarily targets bronchial smooth muscle, it also affects cardiac muscle β1-adrenoceptors. This medication provides rapid (within 5 minutes) and short-acting (4-6 hours) bronchodilation for reversible airway obstruction. Additionally, Salbutamol acts as an anti-inflammatory on mast cells, inhibiting the release of bronchoconstrictor mediators such as histamine, neutrophil chemotactic factor (NCF), and prostaglandin D2.
Dosage & Administration
The Salbutamol Inhaler should be used solely for oral inhalation. Shake the inhaler well before each use.
For Acute Bronchospasm Relief:
- Adults: Inhale 1 or 2 puffs as needed, with a maximum of eight puffs per day.
- Children: Administer half the adult dose.
To Prevent Exercise-Induced or Allergen-Induced Bronchospasm:
- Adults: Take 2 puffs 15 minutes before exercise or allergen exposure, up to 4 times daily, not exceeding 2 puffs per session.
- Children: Administer half the adult dose.
For Chronic Treatment:
- Adults: Use 2 puffs (up to 200 mcg) four times daily.
- Children: Use up to 200 mcg (2 puffs) four times daily.
Interactions
Avoid combining Salbutamol with non-selective beta-blockers like propranolol due to the risk of significant hypokalaemia. Be particularly cautious in cases of severe asthma, especially when used alongside xanthine derivatives, steroids, diuretics, or in conditions of hypoxia. Regular monitoring of serum potassium levels is advised.
Contraindications
Salbutamol Inhaler should not be used by individuals with a known hypersensitivity to Salbutamol or any other ingredients in the inhaler.
Side Effects
Most individuals tolerate Salbutamol well. Potential side effects during inhalation may include tremors, anxiety, muscle cramps, headaches, palpitations, mild heart rate increases, cardiac arrhythmias (such as atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, and extrasystoles), and tachycardia. Discomfort in the mouth and throat may also occur.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Classified as Pregnancy Category C. There are no extensive studies on Salbutamol Inhaler use during pregnancy. Use only if the benefits outweigh the risks to the fetus. Salbutamol components are not known to be excreted in human milk, but caution is advised when used by nursing mothers.
Precautions & Warnings
- Salbutamol Inhalers act quickly to relieve breathing issues.
- Always keep the inhaler upright during use and dose loading.
- A faintly sweet taste after inhalation indicates proper dosage.
- Replace the inhaler cap after use.
- Rinse your mouth with warm water after each use to prevent fungal infections.
- For dry mouth, consider using mouthwash, maintaining good oral hygiene, drinking more water, or consuming sugarless candy.
- Frequent use of Azmasol HFA (more than three times per week) may indicate poor control of your condition; consult your physician.
- Report any chest pain, headache, or rapid heartbeat to your doctor immediately.
Storage Conditions
