Indications
Askorel is formulated to alleviate dry (non-productive) cough, which may arise from recent viral infections. It is also indicated for cough sedation before and after surgical procedures, including bronchoscopy. Additionally, Askorel can be used to manage acute cough caused by various factors, such as whooping cough and acute lower respiratory tract infections (including tracheitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis).
Note: Always consult a registered healthcare professional before using this medication.
Pharmacology
Butamirate Citrate works directly on the cough center in the brain to inhibit coughing. It is a safe, non-sedating agent that is neither chemically nor pharmacologically related to opium alkaloids. Following oral administration, Butamirate Citrate is rapidly and completely absorbed, reaching its peak concentration within 9 hours when using the sustained-release tablet form. It is highly protein-bound, with a plasma elimination half-life of approximately 13 hours. The active metabolites of Butamirate Citrate also exhibit antitussive properties.

Interaction
Avoid using Askorel in conjunction with expectorants.
Contraindications
Do not use if hypersensitive to any active ingredient.
Side Effects
Askorel is generally well-tolerated. Rare adverse reactions may include rash, nausea, diarrhea, and dizziness, which typically resolve upon dose adjustment or discontinuation of the medication.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Butamirate Citrate should be avoided during the first trimester of pregnancy. It may be used in later stages if prescribed by a physician, but caution is advised. For breastfeeding mothers, the safety of Butamirate Citrate during lactation should be carefully evaluated against potential risks, due to a lack of data on its elimination in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
Since Askorel suppresses the cough reflex, avoid concurrent use with expectorants to prevent mucus retention in the airways, which can increase the risk of bronchospasm and respiratory infections. If coughing persists for more than 7 days (or more than 3 days in children under 12), consult a doctor.
Overdose Effects
An accidental overdose of Askorel may lead to symptoms such as drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of balance, and hypotension. Standard emergency protocols should be initiated, including the use of activated charcoal, saline laxatives, and appropriate cardio-respiratory resuscitation.
