Indications:
Antigall is primarily prescribed for the treatment of:
- Cholestasis (Jaundice)
- Viral Hepatitis
- Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD)
- Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC)
- Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC)
- Gallstone Dissolution & Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH)
Note: Always use Antigall as per the advice of a registered healthcare professional.
Description:
Antigall, containing Ursodeoxycholic Acid, works by lowering cholesterol saturation in the bile, which helps in dissolving cholesterol gallstones. It effectively reduces cholesterol secretion in bile and increases bile acid secretion without lowering phospholipids. As a result, Antigall promotes gradual dissolution of gallstones while improving overall liver function.
Pharmacology:
Ursodeoxycholic Acid is a natural bile acid that treats various hepatobiliary conditions. It functions by reducing cholesterol absorption, inhibiting liver cholesterol synthesis, and maintaining bile acid production. Ursodeoxycholic Acid alters bile composition, preventing supersaturation with cholesterol and facilitating the removal of cholesterol from the gallbladder. It also provides hepatoprotective benefits by:
- Protecting cholangiocytes from toxic bile acids
- Stimulating liver and bile secretion
- Reducing liver cell damage caused by bile acid-induced apoptosis
The absorption rate of Ursodeoxycholic Acid is 60-80%, and it is primarily processed by the liver. Its half-life ranges from 3.5 to 5.8 days.
Dosage & Administration:
- For Gallstone Dissolution: 8-12 mg/kg/day (single dose at night or divided doses)
- For Primary Biliary Cirrhosis: 10-15 mg/kg/day (divided doses)
- For Acute Viral Hepatitis: 600 mg/day
- For Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: 300 mg/day
- For Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis: 25-30 mg/kg/day
- For Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH): 13-15 mg/kg/day
Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions regarding dosage.
Interactions:
- Avoid combining Antigall with oestrogenic hormones or bile-acid binding agents (e.g., cholestyramine, antacids), as they can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.
Contraindications:
- Non-functioning gallbladder, calcified or pigmented gallstones, and inflammatory bowel disease are contraindications.
Side Effects:
- Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, pruritus (itching), and gallstone opacification.
Pregnancy & Lactation:
- Pregnancy: Classified as Category B. Antigall has been safely used during the last trimester for treating cholestasis of pregnancy.
- Lactation: There are no known adverse effects from breastfeeding while using Antigall.
Precautions & Warnings:
- Caution should be used in patients with liver disease. Regular monitoring is recommended during treatment.
Therapeutic Class:
- Anti-gallstone medication, classified under Bile Acids.
