Indications
This nasal spray is recommended for preventing and treating allergic rhinitis, including conditions like hay fever and perennial rhinitis, when accompanied by nasal congestion.
Pharmacology
Xylometazoline Hydrochloride acts as a sympathomimetic agent with alpha-adrenergic activity. It causes vasoconstriction, thereby reducing nasal congestion and facilitating easier breathing through the nose during colds.
Sodium Cromoglicate primarily acts locally on the nasal mucosa. It prevents the release of allergic reaction mediators such as histamine and slow-reacting substance of anaphylaxis (SRS-A) from sensitized mast cells post-antigen-antibody interaction. The drug does not inhibit the binding of IgE and the specific antigen but suppresses the release of substances like histamine and SRS-A in response to this reaction. It also mildly inhibits Type-III (late allergic, Arthers) reactions.
Dosage
For adults (including the elderly) and children, the recommended dosage is one spray into each nostril, four times daily.
- Use medication as directed by your healthcare provider.
Administration
Instructions for using the nasal spray:
- Shake the bottle gently and remove the dust cover.
- Hold the spray with your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle and your thumb underneath the bottle. Press down until a fine spray appears. If using for the first time or after a week or more of non-use, prime the nasal applicator by pressing it several times until a fine mist is emitted.
- Gently blow your nose to clear your nostrils.
- Close one nostril and carefully insert the nasal applicator into the open nostril. Tilt your head forward slightly and keep the spray upright. Inhale through your nose and press the applicator down firmly once to release a spray while inhaling.
- Exhale through your mouth.
- Repeat the above steps in the other nostril for subsequent doses.
Cleaning: Clean the nasal spray at least once a week using the following steps:
- Remove the dust cover.
- Gently pull off the nasal applicator.
- Wash the applicator and dust cover with warm water.
- Shake off excess water and allow them to air dry in a cool place. Avoid exposing them to additional heat.
- Gently reattach the applicator to the bottle and replace the dust cover.
- Use medication as directed by your healthcare provider.
Contraindications
This nasal spray should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.
