Description

Indications

Antazol serves as a remedy for various conditions:

  • Relief from nasal congestion associated with colds, rhinitis, sinusitis, and headaches.
  • Assistance in cases of tubal block and serous otitis media accompanied by nasal congestion.

Description

Antazol, a sympathomimetic agent with notable alpha-adrenergic activity, is designed for nasal application. By constricting nasal blood vessels, it effectively relieves congestion in the nasal mucosa and adjacent pharyngeal regions. This facilitates easier breathing for individuals enduring cold symptoms. The effects of Antazol manifest within minutes and last for several hours.

Pharmacology

Nasal congestion stems from various causes such as rhinosinusitis, allergic or non-allergic rhinitis, leading to venous sinusoid congestion in the nasal mucosa lining. Activation of α-adrenergic receptors induces vasoconstriction in these blood vessels, restoring nasal airflow. Xylometazoline, being a selective agonist at α2B-adrenoceptors, exhibits affinity at various adrenoceptors, ultimately reducing nasal resistance and increasing airflow volume. Compared to oxymetazoline, another nasal decongestant, xylometazoline demonstrates a slightly quicker onset of action with similar duration. Studies indicate that relief from earache and sore throat, alongside nasal decongestion, may be attributed to the vasoconstrictive effects of oxymetazoline on the nasal mucosa.
