Indications
Ambolyt is recommended for use in the following conditions:
- Productive cough
- Both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions of the respiratory tract, including upper and lower airways, where thick mucus is present (such as in acute and chronic bronchitis)
- Inflammatory conditions of the rhinopharyngeal area (laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and rhinitis) accompanied by thick mucus
- Asthmatic bronchitis and bronchial asthma with dense mucus
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic pneumonia, among others
Take this medication only as advised by a registered healthcare professional.
Pharmacology
Ambroxol, the active metabolite of bromhexine, has demonstrated a stronger mucus-clearing effect than bromhexine itself. It enhances mucus hydration, liquefying the mucus in the respiratory tract, making it easier to expel and easing breathing. Additionally, it stimulates alveolar cells to produce phospholipids, which reduce surface tension in the alveoli, aiding in improved lung function. Ambroxol also has anti-inflammatory properties, reducing the production of cellular cytokines and arachidonic acid metabolites, which helps manage bronchial hyperactivity. In patients with COPD, it is known to improve airflow.

Some users may experience gastrointestinal issues such as mild stomach discomfort or a sensation of fullness. Rarely, allergic reactions, including rash, hives, or angioedema, may occur.
Use During Pregnancy & Lactation
Animal studies indicate no adverse effects of Ambroxol on pregnancy or fetal development. However, its use during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, is discouraged. Safety during breastfeeding has not yet been established.

Use Ambolyt with caution in patients with a history of gastric or duodenal ulcers or seizure disorders. Those with liver or kidney impairment should also take it cautiously.
