Indications

Ambolyt is recommended for:

• Productive cough relief
• Management of acute and chronic inflammatory conditions affecting the upper and lower respiratory tracts, characterized by thick mucus, including acute and chronic bronchitis
• Inflammatory disorders of the rhinopharyngeal area (such as laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, and rhinitis) associated with thick mucus
• Asthmatic bronchitis and bronchial asthma with heavy mucus production
• Bronchiectasis
• Chronic pneumonia and more.

Pharmacology

Ambroxol, the active metabolite of bromhexine, has been shown to exhibit superior bronchosecretolytic properties compared to bromhexine itself. This active ingredient enhances sputum consistency through hydration, leading to mucus liquefaction within the respiratory tract, thereby facilitating mucus expectoration and alleviating shortness of breath. Ambroxol stimulates surfactant phospholipid production by alveolar cells, reducing surface tension in the alveoli. Additionally, it helps diminish bronchial hyperactivity and possesses anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the production of cellular cytokines and arachidonic acid derivatives. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), it traditionally aids in improving airway patency.

Dosage & Administration

Recommended average daily dosage (preferably after meals):

Pediatric Drops:

• 0-6 months: 0.5 ml, twice daily
• 6-12 months: 1 ml, twice daily
• 1-2 years: 1.25 ml, twice daily

Syrup:

• 2-5 years: 2.5 ml (½ teaspoon), 2-3 times daily
• 5-10 years: 5 ml (1 teaspoon), 2-3 times daily
• 10 years and adults: 10 ml (2 teaspoons), three times daily

Sustained Release Capsule:
For adults and children over 12 years: 1 capsule once daily.

Interaction

Ambolyt should not be used concurrently with antitussive medications (e.g., codeine), as the liquefied phlegm may not be effectively expelled.

Contraindications

Ambolyt is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to Ambroxol or Bromhexine.

Side Effects

Occasional gastrointestinal issues, such as epigastric discomfort and a sensation of fullness, may occur. Rare allergic reactions, including skin rashes, urticaria, or angioneurotic edema, have also been reported.

Pregnancy & Lactation

Studies on teratogenicity and fetal toxicity indicate no harmful effects from Ambroxol; however, it is recommended to avoid its use during pregnancy, particularly in the first trimester. Safety during breastfeeding has not been confirmed.

Precautions & Warnings

Ambolyt should be administered with caution to patients with gastric or duodenal ulcers and those with seizure disorders. Caution is also advised for individuals with hepatic or renal impairment.
