Algicid Plus

Indications

Algicid Plus is prescribed for the following conditions:

• Relief from gastric reflux
• Treatment of heartburn
• Alleviation of indigestion
• Management of flatulence related to gastric reflux
• Pregnancy-related heartburn
• Epigastric and retrosternal discomfort caused by gastric reflux

Pharmacology

Algicid Plus combines two antacids (Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium Alginate), working through a dual-action mechanism:

1. Neutralization: It neutralizes excess stomach acid, reducing pain and discomfort.
2. Barrier Protection: It forms a protective barrier over stomach contents, easing chest discomfort.

Upon ingestion, it reacts quickly with gastric acid, creating a near-neutral pH alginic acid gel “raft.” This raft caps the acid pocket in the stomach, significantly reducing esophageal acid exposure for up to 4 hours. It acts as a demulcent if refluxed into the esophagus and may trap bile and pepsin, offering additional protection.

The antacids neutralize stomach acid rapidly, while the alginate forms a floating barrier that prevents gastroesophageal reflux.

Dosage & Administration

• Oral Suspension:
  • Adults & children 12+ years: 10-20 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times daily.
  • Children 6-12 years: 5-10 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times daily.
  • Children under 6 years: Not recommended.
• Chewable Tablets:
  • Adults & children 12+ years: Chew 2-4 tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to 4 times daily.
  • Children under 12 years: Use only on medical advice.
• Special Populations:
  • Hepatic Impairment: No dose adjustment required.
  • Renal Insufficiency: Use with caution if on a strict salt-restricted diet.

Drug Interactions

Maintain a 2-hour interval between Algicid Plus and other medications, especially Tetracyclines, Fluoroquinolones, Digoxin, Iron salts, and others.

Contraindications

Avoid using Algicid Plus if you have hypersensitivity to any of its components.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include constipation, flatulence, stomach cramps, or belching. Consult a physician if these occur. Overdosage may cause abdominal swelling; seek medical advice if this happens.

Use During Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Safe for use as clinical studies show no harmful effects on the fetus or mother.
• Breastfeeding: No adverse effects on breastfed infants have been observed.
• Fertility: Preclinical and clinical data indicate no impact on fertility.

Precautions & Warnings

• Each 20 mL dose contains 254.5 mg sodium and 260 mg calcium. Use cautiously in cases of congestive cardiac failure, hypercalcemia, or renal issues.
• Not recommended for children under 12 unless advised by a physician.
• Aspartame content makes it unsuitable for patients with phenylketonuria.
• Persistent symptoms or prolonged use beyond 7 days requires medical consultation.

Overdose Management

In case of overdose, provide symptomatic treatment. Symptoms may include abdominal distension.
