Pharmacology
Algicid Plus is a combination of two effective antacids—Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate—and an Alginate (Sodium Alginate). It works in two primary ways:
- Neutralizes excess stomach acid, providing relief from discomfort and pain.
- Forms a protective barrier over the stomach contents, helping to soothe the burning sensations in the chest.
The product’s action is purely physical and doesn’t rely on systemic absorption. Upon ingestion, the active ingredients react with gastric acid to form an Alginic Acid gel raft with a near-neutral pH. This raft interacts with and caps the acid pocket in the stomach, reducing esophageal acid exposure. It effectively prevents gastro-esophageal reflux for up to 4 hours, safeguarding the esophagus from acid, pepsin, and bile. In severe cases, the raft may reflux into the esophagus, providing a soothing effect. Furthermore, studies show that the raft can trap bile and pepsin, offering additional protection to the esophagus.
Calcium Carbonate neutralizes gastric acid quickly to alleviate indigestion and heartburn, with Sodium Bicarbonate enhancing this effect.
