Algicid DX

Indications

Algicid DX is used for the treatment of:

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
• Heartburn and indigestion
• Flatulence associated with gastric reflux
• Pregnancy-related heartburn
• Epigastric and retrosternal discomfort due to gastric reflux

Pharmacology

Algicid DX combines two antacids (Calcium Carbonate and Sodium Bicarbonate) and an alginate (Sodium Alginate) to offer dual action:

1. Neutralizing excess stomach acid to alleviate discomfort and pain.
2. Forming a protective gel barrier that shields the esophagus from the burning sensation caused by acid reflux.

The product works physically, without being absorbed into the bloodstream. Upon ingestion, it reacts quickly with stomach acid to form a gel-like raft of Alginate Acid with a near-neutral pH. This raft effectively caps the acid pocket in the stomach, reducing acid exposure to the esophagus. It floats on stomach contents, preventing gastroesophageal reflux for up to 4 hours and offers protection from acid, pepsin, and bile. In severe cases, the raft may even reflux into the esophagus, providing soothing relief. Furthermore, studies have shown that the raft can entrap bile and pepsin, offering additional protection for the esophagus.

Calcium Carbonate neutralizes gastric acid, providing rapid relief from heartburn and indigestion, enhanced by Sodium Bicarbonate.

Dosage & Administration

For Oral Suspension:

• Adults and Children Over 12 Years: 10-20 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times daily.
• Children 6-12 Years: 5-10 mL after meals and at bedtime, up to four times daily.
• Children Under 6 Years: Not recommended.
• Elderly: No dose adjustments necessary.

For Chewable Tablets:

• Adults and Children Over 12 Years: Take 2-4 tablets after meals and at bedtime, up to four times a day.
• Children Under 12 Years: Only as advised by a healthcare provider.

Hepatic Impairment: No dose adjustment required.
Renal Insufficiency: Use caution if a strict salt-restricted diet is recommended.

Drug Interactions

To avoid interactions, wait at least 2 hours between taking Algicid DX and other medications, particularly:

• Tetracyclines, Digoxin, Fluoroquinolones, Iron salts, Ketoconazole
• Neuroleptics, Thyroid hormones, Penicillamine, Beta-blockers (e.g., Atenolol, Metoprolol)
• Glucocorticoids, Chloroquine, Bisphosphonates, and Estramustine.

Contraindications

Algicid DX is contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to the active ingredients or any of the excipients.

Side Effects

While Algicid DX is effective in treating discomfort, side effects may occur, including:

• Constipation, flatulence, or stomach cramps
• Belching
• Abdominal distension in case of overdose

If side effects persist or worsen, consult a physician.

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy: Clinical studies in over 500 pregnant women show no malformation or toxicity related to the active ingredients. Algicid DX can be safely used during pregnancy if required.
• Breastfeeding: No adverse effects have been noted in breastfed infants. The product is safe for use while breastfeeding.
• Fertility: Pre-clinical studies show no negative impact on fertility or reproduction. No evidence suggests an effect on human fertility.

Precautions & Warnings

• Each 20 mL dose contains 254.5 mg of sodium. Take caution when on a sodium-restricted diet (e.g., for heart failure or kidney disease).
• Each 20 mL contains 260 mg of calcium. Care is needed for patients with conditions like hypercalcemia or calcium-based kidney stones.
• Algicid DX is high in sodium and should be used with caution in patients on a restricted salt diet.
• Algicid DX contains aspartame, so should not be given to patients with phenylketonuria.
• Children under 12 years should only take this medication under medical supervision.

If symptoms persist or treatment exceeds 7 days, seek medical advice. Algicid DX may mask more serious underlying conditions and should not be used in patients with renal impairment or low phosphate levels.

Overdose Effects

In case of overdose, symptomatic treatment should be provided. Abdominal distension may occur.
