Indications
Adryl syrup is prescribed for a range of conditions including:
- Allergic diseases like hay fever, allergic rhinitis, and urticaria
- Skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis
- Gastrointestinal allergies and allergic reactions to injections or transfusions
- Postoperative nausea, vomiting, and motion sickness
- Some forms of parkinsonism and allergic conjunctivitis
- Occasionally used as a nighttime sleep aid and for short-term management of insomnia
Pharmacology
Diphenhydramine in Adryl syrup acts as an H1-receptor antagonist, with anti-histaminic, anti-emetic, anti-vertigo, sedative, and hypnotic properties. It blocks histamine effects, inhibits vomiting reflexes, and acts centrally on vestibular and medullary centers.
Dosage & Administration
- Tablet:
- Adults: 25 mg to 50 mg, 3 to 4 times daily
- Children (10 years and older): 25 mg, 3 to 4 times daily or as directed
- Syrup:
- Children under 2 years: 2.5 mL every 4 to 6 hours
- Children 2 to under 6 years: 5 mL every 4 to 6 hours
- Children 6 to 12 years: 10-20 mL every 4 to 6 hours
- Adults and children 12 years and older: 10-20 mL every 4 to 6 hours
- Sleep aid:
- Adults and children over 12 years: 50 mg at bedtime
Interaction
Use caution with antidepressants and alcohol due to potential interactions that may intensify effects.
Contraindications
Avoid use in premature or newborn infants, and in conditions like asthma, narrow angle glaucoma, or peptic ulcers. Contraindicated in patients receiving MAO inhibitors or undergoing antidepressant therapy.
Side Effects
Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Rarely, vertigo, palpitations, and allergic reactions may occur.
